Copa America 2019

If you’re looking to watch world class soccer this summer, the Copa America promises to be a thrilling tournament, featuring all ten South American national teams. Five of the teams are ranked in the top 15 by FIFA, which should translate into some exhilarating soccer matches. CONMEBOL (The South American Football Confederation) organizes the Copa America every four years, and usually invites other national teams to round out the tournament. This year it will feature Qatar and Japan, who duked it out in the Asian Cup final earlier this year, with Qatar grabbing the win at 3-1. The two teams aren’t in the same group, so it’s unlikely that we’ll get to see a rematch, but it should be fun to see these teams match up against South American teams. Mark your calendars for June 14th when matches for the Copa America will begin. The final will be held on Sunday, July 7th at 3 pm (CST). But, you might as well make a day of it and tune in earlier that day (at 10 am) for the Women’s World Cup final.

Teams to Watch

Boasting of some of the world’s most explosive players like Messi and Neymar, South America overflows with exciting soccer. Let’s take a look at some of the teams to keep an eye on. The twelve teams in the tournament were drawn into the following groups:

Of course, you’ll want to keep tabs on the highest ranked teams. The current top ranked teams in the world are: Brazil (3), Uruguay (6), Argentina (11), Columbia (12), and Chili (15). Chili is the reigning Copa America champion, winning the previous two tournaments. However, Brazil, the tournament host, is favored to win this time around. With no obvious contender in their group, they should have no problem getting into the quarter finals. Group B should prove interesting, with the 2020 World Cup host, Qatar, in the group. However, it’s unlikely anyone but Argentina and Columbia will make it out. Chili and Uruguay should be an exciting match up in Group C.

Games to Watch in the First Round:

  • June 15, 5pm (CST)- Argentina vs. Columbia
  • June 24, 6 pm (CST) - Chili vs. Uruguay
